The Ekkamai Neighborhood

Ekkamai is a popular area that’s located on the cusp of prime Sukhumvit.  It’s a blend of classy and down-to-earth that offers up a diverse range of amenities and facilities in education, shopping, medical, entertainment and accommodation making it one of the most desirable and balanced places to live.

Ekkamai, the neighborhood, essentially runs along the thoroughfare of Sukhumvit Soi 63 which is populated by a healthy amount of residences, quaint shopping squares and small businesses, and is supported by a web of backstreets each with their own distinct flavor.

At the face of Ekkamai, the main intersection of Sukhumvit Soi 63 and main Sukhumvit road, is a major 4-way intersection that delivers a diverse set of establishments along with the Ekkamai BTS station, certifying it as a bonafide member of prime Sukhumvit real estate.

The Four Corners of Ekkamai’s Main Intersection

Bangkok Mediplex Center, located on the north-west corner of Ekkamai’s main intersection, is a gorgeous 4-story medical mall made up of health and beauty outpatient clinics with first-class doctors and surgeons providing the latest in medical and wellness therapy services and cosmetic treatments.

Gateway Mall, located on the south-west corner of Ekkamai’s main intersection, is a Japanese influenced and lifestyle shopping mall.  Restaurants, supermarkets, fashion outlets, health & beauty products, IT and an edutainment center are all inside its eight floors including Snow Town, a cold theme park of activities and restaurants in artificial snow.

Major Sukhumvit-Ekkamai, located on the north-east corner of Ekkamai’s main intersection, is a movie, entertainment and fast food restaurant complex.  Bowling, ice-skating and fitness club are also part of the things to do here.

Just beside the theatre complex is the Krungdep Cooperative Store where you can find a network of daily household items and foodstuffs for a bargain.

Banrie Coffee, located on the south-east corner of Ekkamai intersection, is actually a large outdoor patio that serves food and coffee and moonlights as Ekkamai’s Beer Garden.  Locals and passing by tourists enjoy hanging out under the trees and tents with freshly grilled chicken, a drink and listening to live music in the evenings.

A number of schools grades primary to university can be found supporting the area around the intersection.  Integral as well is the National Science Center for Education, which among the different sciences, holds a museum and planetarium.  On each of the Science Center’s sides are prominent organizations The Thai Medical Women’s Association and UNESCO along the main intersection of Ekkamai.

Rounding out Ekkamai’s frontage is the Sukhumvit Hospital and the Wat That Thong Temple.  A short distance south and you’re driving golf balls at the 42 Tee Off golf range.

Inside Ekkamai’s Neighborhood

But the real Ekkamai neighborhood lays inside the thoroughfare of Sukhumvit 63, a neighborhood beautifully moderated with residences, little shopping squares, and a diverse blend of small businesses.  The further you move down the Ekkamai strip and explore its many alleyways, the more you’ll discover the neighborhood’s delights.

They include French bread shops, UK pie shops, Korean restaurants, Japanese spas, Italian bistros, Thai cafes, keg pubs, sleek lounges and a touch of enthusiast bicycling shops with a few exotic car dealerships thrown in.

Shops are distributed evenly along the length of Ekkamai’s street or in one of its many quiet shopping squares like Park Lane in the beginning of Ekkamai and further down, the Index Living Mall and supermarket shopping avenue.

Ekkamai’s many backstreets adds layers to the neighborhood and you are rewarded for exploring them.  Ekkamai Soi 12 is a popular backstreet that treats you to some very modern and chic diners and cafes.  The backstreet connects to Ekkamai Soi 10 to reveal more restaurants that serve up international dishes, a town square of Thai-European restaurants and pubs, and a small home-style Muay Thai training gym.  Just an example of some of the things you can find in the Ekkamai backstreets that reach up to 30.

For a more flashy night out at the discotheques, Ekkamai Soi 5 turns into Thonglor Soi 10, home to the trendiest nightclubs in Bangkok.

Condominiums in Ekkamai

Along the main road of Sukhumvit and inside Ekkamai street, high-end condominiums mark their territory in this popular and upscale area.

A few minutes walk north of the BTS is Fullerton Sukhumvit, a luxury condo with a prime location on the main road.

The Nusasiri Grand Condo towers above the Mediplex and offers elegant modern condominiums above the medical treatment complex.

The Loft Ekkamai is a new luxury condominium project on the facing road of Ekkamai 150 meters from the BTS.  Another new project across the road in Sukhumvit Soi 42 is the Rhythm Sukhumvit.

At the mouth of Ekkamai street, you’re greeted by Civic Horizon, a hotel and residence building, and the Noble Reveal, another upscale condominium with a great location at the front entrance of Ekkamai.

Nice condominiums and apartments are tucked inside Ekkamai’s backstreets as you should know by now.  You will find the posh condominium Ceil by Sansiri and a large but older condominium La Cascada, both inside Ekkamai Soi 12 and Ekkamai Soi 10 as small examples.

Commuting and Transportation

If you find the need, commuting to greater commercial and business areas in Phrom Phong and Asoke is only a few stops from the Ekkamai BTS station.  Traveling the opposite direction south will take you to flourishing Udomsuk.

Navigating the Ekkamai streets and you'll find shorcuts into adjacent and trendy Thonglor.

Reaching the far end of Ekkamai Sukhumvit 63 brings you to a junction that turns into Petchaburi or into the Sirat Expressway which further links you to Ramintra, great if you’re traveling in a car or taxi and need to access the areas of Greater Bangkok.

The Bangkok Bus Terminal is also found on the main intersection of Ekkamai.  It offers lower rates than commercial tour buses but makes more stops before reaching destinations, best for Pattaya, Trat, and ferry points to Koh Chang and Koh Samet near the eastern seaboard.
